Stunning Creature ... The Year In Photographs ... January 17, 2013
A stunning insect visitor spotted this morning feeding on the nectar of the Duranta flowers. Look at the brilliant metallic blue colour of this fellow. I.D. would be most welcome.
Extra: thanks to the great Google, I've found out this is a Neon Cuckoo Bee. What a fabulous name!

Quite spectacular! Such a colourful bee and a great photo.
ReplyDeleteThanks Pieces of Sunshine. It's an amazing looking thing.
DeleteHi Bernie, I have no idea what the insect is, it probably doesn't live in Britain anyway! Just wanted to say it was a great photo, stunning colours!
ReplyDeleteThank you Helene. I've since found out it's a native Aussie bee.
DeleteFabulous insect, so would it be a native bee, collecting honey? I know the duranta is popular with butterflies. We have some spectectular insects, just think too of the christmas beetle. You wonder how they get such brilliant metallic colours, amazing.
ReplyDeleteYes Marguerite, it is apparently a native and found across northern and eastern Australia. The iridescent blue is simply amazing. We've had a few Christmas Beetles here lately, and I always marvel at the fluorescent colours on their wings.
DeleteGreat photo! I've never seen such insect, it looks amazing! :) Greetings from Poland!
ReplyDeleteHi Bernie...its cold here and those beautiful blossoms make me want warm weather even more.
ReplyDeleteOh I wondered if it was a blue banded bee at first - what a wonder it is to be able to research online and get the details. Lovely photo thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous native bee....I love the color.
ReplyDeleteSuch a pretty bee never heard of it or seen it. Thanks for showing.
