What Is It? ... The Year In Photographs ... September 2nd, 2013

I ordered a Mexican Spider Lily from a reputable online nursery with whom I've placed many orders before.  I must say I've never had any trouble with any plant they've sent me before, well until now that is.

This gorgeous thing is definitely not a Mexican Spider Lily.  It has an orange bloom for a start, and the bloom looks nothing like a Spider Lily.

It grows from a bulb and has dainty little bell-shaped blooms that dangle from the ends of a long arching stem.  Is there anyone out there who might have an idea what this pretty little thing is?   I'm definitely going to keep it, as I think it's simply gorgeous, but I'd love to have an I.D. so I know what conditions it needs to flourish.

  1. Bernie, it is terribly cute - but I can't help but be intrigued as to how a good company could send the wrong plant. I hope someone answers and you get an ID on it. Shan't be from me, I'm flat out identifying the difference between a blade of buffalo and nut grass!

    1. Rose, I've never had any trouble with this particular online nursery before. They've been fabulous. Their plants have always been healthy and until now, exactly what I've ordered. I'm not going to complain too much about the mix-up as I've fallen in love with this lovely thing.

  3. No idea, but it's lovely, isn't it? If you're lucky, it may be something rarer and more expensive than the spider lily, which you should also be able to get for free from the company, since they made the mistake!

    1. I was hoping the same thing, Lyn. It's not a plant I've seen around here before. The company have been great and are sending an extra plant, but not the Mexican Spider Lily. They were apparently the last of the stock, for now anyway.

  4. Bernie,
we have spider lilies coming out of our ears - I could send you some. I sent you an e-mail. That looks as though there are just insignificant pinkish leaves. Very pretty flower. I hope someone can give you an answer.

    1. Yes I've sent off an email to them and am waiting a reply, Missy. It will be interesting to see what they have to say about it. I've poured over their catalogues and haven't seen anything like it.

  6. Take a picture of it and send them..or email it to them. Ask them what it is and why your spider lily did not arrive. From the looks of the mysterious plant I would say cultivation would be a glass on the window sill. Seems to be doing pretty well LOL!
