Well, that was a very interesting 36 hours!!!!

Only a few more official Summer sunrises to go now.  The end of Summer is drawing near ... February is our last Summer month ... but the hot, sticky and muggy conditions will carry on until at least mid-March.  It's not much fun getting out into the garden right now and I'm avoiding it as much as possible.

One of the things I've noticed about this Summer is the absence of the usual throngs of insects.






Take the Cicadas for instance.  During our Summers, they are usually so deafening that I get driven inside into the air-con just to give my ears a break!

Showcase of Native Flora Blooms.</title><summary type='text'>I had the privilege recently of visiting our Australian National Botanic Gardens way down south in Canberra.  This particular botanic garden showcases all Australian natives ... there's not an introduced species to be found.  So many of the native trees and shrubs were blooming while I was there and I just had to share some of these beauties again.

Happy New Year everyone.  I can't believe it's already the middle of the first week of 2012.  I've had a little break over the past couple of weeks and really enjoyed the Christmas / New Year holidays.

It's Cocky Apple Time!</title><summary type='text'>Yes our native Planchonia careya or Cocky Apple trees are flowering at the moment.  This means these trees seem to be back to their usual timeline.  Last year, after a rather damp and unusual 'dry' season, they bloomed in October.  This year we had our normal dry 'dry' ... no rain at all for seven months ... and the Cocky Apples are blooming once again in late November into early December.

As The End Of Springtime Draws Closer.</title><summary type='text'>Only  12 more days until the start of Summer.  Springtime here is almost over and the 'dry' season is drawing to a close as well.  There's still quite a bit of colour in various corners of my place despite the parched conditions, especially in my tiny Daylily Corner of the tiered garden beds.  The dark varieties have been strutting their stuff lately.

A commemorative service was held in our nation's capital, Canberra, yesterday evening.  Our Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, joined the United States Ambassador to Australia, Jeffrey Bleich, at a twilight ceremony to remember the September 11 attacks and to honour the victims of that terrible day.

It's Springtime!</title><summary type='text'>The first day of Spring (September 1st) is known as Wattle Day here in Oz.  In many, many corners of this great land, the native Acacias or Wattle Trees start to bloom and signal the beginning of our Spring ... but not here.  In the surrounding bushland in my north-eastern corner of Australia, the Acacias bloom from early Autumn into early Winter, not Spring!

So we're not seeing this right now.

A Likely Pair.</title><summary type='text'>These two Laughing Kookaburras have been spending a whole lot of time together.  I have spotted them perched in trees together or sitting on the verandah railing together.  They definitely seem to like each other's company.

This beauty is not easily mistaken for any other bird with its striking blue patch around the eyes.  Entomyzon cyanotis ... the Blue-faced Honeyeater ... is one of our larger Honeyeaters with golden-green upperparts and a pure white underbody.  It has a black crown, a black face and a black neck with a narrow white band across the back.

I love watching the little coloured papery bracts open up to reveal the fluffy flowerhead in the middle of the bloom.

May is the last month of our Autumn and the Acacias have started their dry season blooming.  Already there's a further little drop in our daytime temps (expected high of only 27 deg C / 80 deg F today) and the nights are certainly getting cooler.  Last night was a lovely 17 deg C / 62 F.

This poor creature, Philemon buceroides, is not the prettiest bird on the planet.  Whilst it has a close resemblance to a vulture from some angles, this is in fact the largest of our Aussie Friarbirds.
